August is Washington wine month, and it is indeed something worth celebrating. With over 900 wineries in the state, there are a lot to choose from. Today I had the pleasure of chatting  with Shelley Tomberg, Executive Director of Auction Of Washington Wines.

For the last 31 years, they have been putting on events that support the state’s wine industry, while raising money for Seattle Children’s Hospital and the wine program at Washington State University.

August is a busy month for Shelley as she will be hosting 6 events, with their biggest wine-focused event of the year, the Winemaker Picnic & Barrel Tasting on Thursday, August 16th from 4:00 – 8:00, at Chateau Ste Michelle, Winery in Woodinville. With over 1,500 expected attendees, myself included, you can enjoy a casual afternoon of tasting and mingling with over 80 wine makers and wineries, taste amazing local food from Tulalip Resort Casino, barrel auctions, a balloon pop with prizes, and a wine toss!

Each year Auction Of Washington Wines selects an honorary Vintner Of The Year, and this year went to Charlie Hoppes of Fidelitas Wines. Known as “The Wine Boss”, by his peers in the industry, Charlie started making wines for Chateau Ste Michelle, and Col Solare.’ He then venntured out to make his own brand Fidelitas over 22 years ago, where he focuses on the Red Mountain AVA, and handcrafting Bordeaux-styled red and white wines. To experience some of Charlie’s wines visit their two tasting rooms, one in Woddinville, and one in Benton City.
